The Accidental Rescue started in a way we never expected. A friend messaged to say, “I know you like rabbits — there are seven that need a home.” At first, we said absolutely not. We already had a bonded group of six at home and knew we couldn’t possibly afford to neuter and vaccinate more. But when we went to see them, their living conditions were horrendous. Walking away wasn’t an option. So, we took them all in — and that was the beginning of The Accidental Rescue.
Since then, we’ve helped over 500 rabbits — closer to 700–800 by now. Over time, our focus has shifted, and we are now primarily a sanctuary for elderly, sick, and disabled bunnies. We like to say we specialise in disabled rabbit care, providing lifelong homes rather than rehoming.
Today, the rescue is run by just the two of us, myself and Chris, with the amazing support of three volunteers. Between us, we handle everything from nightly medications and feeds to bonding and day-to-day care.
